Improving English through a moving class

          How do you feel if you study just in the classroom and meet just a few usual friends ?? There is no change. You get bored, don’t you ?? You need different atmosphere, maybe out in the open air, like we often do in our club, English Club Program in Jakarta. We belong to an English course and have a club namely the PEC English Club. Every Sunday morning, we have programs from 10.a.m. The programs are : free conversation, story telling, mystery guest, self introduction (in the case of we have new members), discussion, various games and other activities. For discussion, we are divided into two groups : Senior group and Junior group. Those, who are at level children, Primary one and Two belong to Junior group. And those, who are at level Intermediate One and Two and Advance belong to Senior group.

          Besides doing all the programs mentioned above, the class also has outing program such as : trip to Bali, Jogja, Pangandaran, Bandung, Central Java, once a year. Also we do “Moving Class”, to somewhere, not too far away from Jakarta like : Soekarno-Hatta airport, Taman Mini, Museum, Ancol beach, Bogor, Cibodas, etc, at least once in a month.

          So, what is “Moving Class”?? It is an activity learning English program in another atmosphere. Just imagine, if it’s in the classroom always, everything is limited. But with the outing program, the student have unlimited time to ask the teacher, whatever they want and to talk, feel free and relaxed in an open environment. The students would feel cheerful. Not an electric fan, but a natural fan-fresh wind. No walls to look at, but an open area like a park with shady trees and so on. That is what we do.

          About 150 people (100 boys and 50 girls), the members of  PEC English Club did a moving class to Bogor Botanical Garden. Exactly at 08.30 a.m. on Sunday, once a week all members of  PEC English Club left the secretariat after having a short prayer in each member’s belief. To finance this benefical program, each member paid Rp 40000,- which covered the bus fare, lunch, snack, soft drink and entrance fee to the place. Ten minutes after leaving Jakarta, the committee announced that during the program, in and out of the bus, every member must speak English one another. In case of problems, they were requested to ask the teachers or senior members.

          The members finally reached Bogor at 11.00 a.m. We took a rest for a moment. There was a group of friends there from PEC Tangerang who had been waiting for us and welcomed us warmly. There had been an arrangement between the friends from Tangerang and PEC English Club to have a football tournament. The tournament ran well. But unfortunately, the people from Tangerang won it and PEC English Club lost. But anyhow, it didn’t matter, as this was only a friendship tournament. Also maybe PEC English Club lost because they were tired from Bogor.

          The moving class has the aims of improving the students ability in speaking English, strengthening the friendship among the students and refreshing the students minds. It ended at 06.30 p.m. The members were tired but they were happy. They arrived back at 08.15 p.m.
